Shaylyn Ammerman, the 14-month-old girl who was reported missing from her Indiana home on Wednesday, was raped by the suspect, 22-year-old Kyle Parker, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in court Monday. Monday’s updated report states that Parker confessed the crime to his stepfather. More details released about the autopsy include evidence of “sustained sexual assault against Shaylyn.” The affidavit quotes a doctor as saying that this was the “worst case of sexual trauma she had seen in her career.”
Friday’s initial autopsy result revealed that Shaylyn Michelle Kay Ammerman died from asphyxiation and her death was ruled a homicide, reports the Herald Times on March 26. The last time the little girl was seen alive and safe by her loved ones was when she was fast asleep in her crib after her mother had tucked her into bed shortly before midnight on Tuesday.
The 20-pound little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes was wearing a white zip-up onesie with owls on it and a purple pacifier clipped on. She also had a blue and white Winnie the Pooh blanket.
Having your child disappear in the middle of the night is a parent’s worst nightmare:
“It’s every parent’s unthinkable nightmare – waking up in the morning to find an empty crib and no trace of the child that should be tucked under the small covers.”
When Shaylyn was discovered missing from her crib on Wednesday morning by her father, her parents alerted authorities. An intensive search including search dogs, cadaver dogs, sonar, personnel from multiple law enforcement agencies, and the FBI was conducted. Against all hope to find the little girl alive, her remains were discovered on Thursday around 6 p.m. in a remote area located near the White River and northeast of Gosport.
The location of the little girl’s remains was not too far from her home in the 400 block of West Jefferson Street in Spencer. She had shared the home with her grandmother and her father, Justin Ammerman.
According to Jessica Stewart, Shaylyn Ammerman’s mom, the little girl’s father was having a party Tuesday evening, and the suspect who has been arrested in Shaylyn’s death was in the house that night. Adam Ammerman, Justin Ammerman’s brother, said that Kyle Parker, the 22-year-old suspect, had been drinking at the home on the night Shaylyn vanished.
“We do know he was in the house that night, but we don’t know where his whereabouts were, we cannot draw a map right now of what happened when he left that house,”commented Sgt. Curt Durnil with Indiana State Police.
Parker was arrested on Thursday night. He is facing two counts of obstruction of justice, a count of failure to report a dead body and a count of unlawful disposition of a dead body. Court records show that Parker had been charged in the past with possession of paraphernalia, possession of a synthetic or lookalike drug, and criminal trespassing.
Shaylyn Ammerman’s father denies having had a party at his house on Tuesday night and claims that someone entered the house through the front door and kidnapped his little girl: “Either somebody has a really, really big grudge over us or something, because I don’t see anybody in this town ever doing something like this. Whoever has my daughter, return her please,” he said after his daughter’s disappearance.
Shaylyn Ammerman’s mom does not believe the girl’s father:
“He shows really no emotion. That is why I think that he is hiding something and I know when he is lying.”
Justin Ammerman was subjected to a polygraph test on Thursday and the results apparently left investigators worried.
“I don’t honestly think that he would hurt her purposely, I think he would not know what to do if it happened,” said Shaylyn Ammerman’s grandmother Carol Stewart.
