Mireia Lalaguna Royo was crowned Miss World 2015 on Saturday. Royo, 23, entered the pageant as Miss Spain. She lives in Barcelona, where she is a pharmacy student. Her plan is to branch off her studies into nutrition. She hopes to open a business focusing on alternative medicine.
Royo studied piano at the Lyceum of Barcelona. She also studied musical language and harmony. Her hobbies include running, reading and skiing. She also enjoys visiting other countries. She has traveled throughout Europe and to the Far East.
Earlier Saturday, Royo was announced as the winner of the Top Model Award at the pageant. The modeling competition includes a high-profile catwalk fashion show in front of a live audience. Participants are judged on good posture, balance, and technique.
Contestants from throughout the world competed in several categories over a period of weeks. Challenge events leading up to the finals are in the categories of Beauty with a Purpose, multimedia, sports, talent, and modeling. This year’s competition was held in Sanya, China. Contestants arrived on Nov. 21. They are scheduled to leave China on Sunday.
Winners reign for one year. Rojo replaces Miss World 2014 Rolene Strauss. Strauss reigned as Miss South Africa before being crowned Miss World last year. During her reign as Miss World, Strauss championed causes related to health, education, and women. She hails from Volksrust, South Africa. She is a medical student. Strauss lists her largest interests as academics, sport, and leadership.
Miss World was started in 1951. Since its inception, it has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for children’s charities. Women from more than 100 countries compete in the pageant.
