Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach on Sunday was crowned Miss Universe 2015. She entered the pageant as the reigning Miss Philippines. First runner-up was Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez. Gutierrez was mistakenly named Miss Universe by host Steve Garvey. After a couple of minutes of confusion, Wurtzbach was crowned the winner.
Miss USA Olivia Jordan was named the second runner-up. Rounding out the top five were Miss Australia Monika Radulovic and Miss France Flora Coquerel. Named to the top 10, but later eliminated from the further competition, were Miss Curaçao Kanisha Sluis, Miss Dominican Republic Clarissa Molina, Miss Japan Ariana Miyamoto, Miss Thailand Any porn Chalermburanawong and Miss Venezuela Mariana Jimenez. Finishing in the top 15 were Miss Belgium Annelies Törös, Miss Brazil Martina Brandt, Miss Indonesia Anindya Kisumu Putri, Miss Mexico Wendy Esparza and Miss South Africa Refilwe Mthimunye.
Contestants were judged in the categories of personal interview, evening gowns, and swimsuits. Contestants are ages 18 to 27 years.
Wurtzbach, 26, is of Filipino and German descent. She has worked as a model, actress, stylist, newspaper lifestyle writer and beauty pageant titleholder. Wurtzbach was born in Germany and grew up in the Philippines. She attended ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center and learned culinary arts at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies in Manila. Her modeling experience is primarily in cosmetics. When she was younger, she adopted the stage name of Pia Ramero and worked as an actress. She speaks English, Filipino, and German and lives in Cagayan De Oro, the Philippines.
Miss Universe reigns for one year. She will serve as an international spokesperson to increase an awareness of AIDS and to campaign for medical and social support for disease victims. The pageant is associated with Aid for AIDS, Best Buddies, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, GMHC, God’s Love We Deliver, the Latino Commission on AIDS and YouthAIDS / PSI.
