Preliminary competition got under way Thursday night for Miss Iowa 2016 and Miss Iowa’s Outstanding Teen 2016. A second and final night of competition is scheduled for Friday, with a new royalty crowned on Saturday. The winner of the Miss Iowa Pageant will go on to represent the state at the Miss America Pageant, scheduled for broadcast Sept. 11 on the ABC television network. Winner of the teen pageant will travel to Orlando, Florida in August to represent Iowa in the America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant Competition.
Winners of Thursday night judging among Miss Iowa contestants were Miss Scott County Johannah Vittletoe for lifestyle and fitness; and Miss Cedar Valley Molly Schunicht for talent. Teen winners were Miss Clinton County’s Outstanding Teen Julia Campbell for lifestyle and fitness; and Miss Cedar Valley’s Outstanding Teen Michaela Rader.
Taylor Wiebers is the reigning Miss Iowa 2015. She studied at the University of Iowa. Her ambition is to have a career as an organizer of a non-profit organization targeting pediatric cancer. Her pageant platform was “The St Baldrick’s Foundation: SHAVE, SERVE, SHARE. Her pageant talent was singing “Don’t Forget Me.” Wiebers finished in the top 12 at last year’s Miss America Pageant, and was a preliminary winner in both the talent and swimsuit competitions.
Nina Yu is completing her reign as Miss Iowa’s Outstanding Teen 2015. Her ambition is to To earn degrees in musical theatre and business administration and become a producer. Her pageant platform was “ Diversity Advocacy: Embracing the Unique in Everyone.” Her pageant talent was playing “ “White Water Chopsticks” by Calvin Jones on the piano.
