Australian pop star Kylie Minogue is currently in a legal battle with 18 year old Kylie Jennerover the trademarking of the name ‘Kylie’. It all started when Kylie Jenner applied to trademark the name in the US which would allow her to be protected using the name ‘Kylie’ and everything associated with it, including the advertising as cited by the World Intellectual Property Review. Kylie Minogue 47, has had an incredibly successful 30 year music and acting career with over 80 million record sales worldwide. She also has countless hit songs and awards under her belt, making her one of Australia’s most successful artists in history.
After finding out that her first name could also be trademarked to represent reality star Kylie Jenner, Kylie Minogue’s representatives were quick to step in and file a notice of opposition in response to Kylie Jenner’s application. Kylie Minogue’s team believe it will cause a lot of problems and confusion to her brand and name, not to mention, the decades of achievements and career experience over Kylie Jenner. Beginning her career in 1979, Kylie Minogue has won a total of 176 awards worldwide including a grammy award and 16 Aria Music Awards.
Kylie Jenner, who rose to fame with her famous reality TV family the Kardashian’s in the early 2000’s has become a household name and has her own brand and products for hair, clothing and makeup much similar to what Kylie Minogue also has. Interestingly enough, Kylie Minogue has owned the domain name Kylie.com since 1996, a year before Kylie Jenner was even born. Kylie Minogue is apparently on a mission to stop the trademarking in it’s tracks. Kylie shot to fame in the early 80s in Australia on the long standing soap opera ‘Neighbours’, which ended up being the launching pad to her music career in 1988, with her very first hit ‘Locomotion’ and the rest, as they say, is history.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this legal battle between the two, but I have to say, I think Kylie Minogue will come out on top with this and I think she deserves to!
