The 2016 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg took place in St. Petersburg, Florida on Sunday, Mar. 13, officially beginning this year’s Verizon IndyCar Series season. You can view some of the best photos from the 110-lap race now by using the slideshow viewer included with this article.
Team Penske’s Juan Pablo Montoya was the winning driver, followed by Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud and Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay. Click through our slideshow to see pictures of all the top three cars in action on the streets of St. Petersburg, along with Montoya’s moment of victory.
Most of the cars in the field sported new liveries for the 2016 season. Montoya’s No. 2 ran a majority silver paint scheme as opposed to his usual red, white and black in tribute to Team Penske’s 50th anniversary in motorsports. Pagenaud, whose No. 22 bore the yellow and blue of Penske Truck Rental for most of the 2015 campaign, is now black and blue-green to coincide with the colors of new sponsor Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Our slideshow will also give race fans a look at the new No. 16 Rahal Letterman Lanigan racing car driven by 2015 Indy Lights champion Spencer Pigot, who is joining RLL for three Verizon IndyCar Series races this year. Pigot made his debut at St. Petersburg and will return to the grid for the two races taking place in the month of May: the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.
But Sunday belonged to Juan Pablo Montoya and Team Penske, and photographers captured all the action in these 12 best pictures from the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
